Wondering if the community would get behind the idea, the Waterway Warriors started the Barrel Program to prevent littering by visitors. We installed trash barrels in popular areas, encouraging people to use them instead of leaving trash around.
The program has been a hit, with over 80% of trash now ending up in the barrels. We've placed nearly 35 barrels along the 4-mile Pineda Causeway, a busy spot visited by thousands every year. Volunteers empty the barrels weekly. This community-funded program is responsible for removing over half of the debris from the edges of our waterways.
