Thanks to Alec Buchness from Osprey Flyfishing and the passionate advocacy of Fred Goldstein from Xplore the IRL, the Waterway Warriors are on a mission to remove hundreds of tires lurking on the shore and beneath the surface of an island just off the Thousand Island Conservation Area near the Banana River Aquatic Preserve.
According to local lore, these tires were placed back in the 1970s as a creative solution to fight shoreline erosion. But fast forward to today, and they’re no longer serving any purpose—in fact, they’re doing more harm than good. Scattered and deteriorating, these aging tires are now choking out new growth and leaching toxins into the water, threatening both aquatic life and vital shoreline vegetation.
We're ready to take action! The Waterway Warriors are collaborating with numerous agencies and volunteers to remove the tires. Want to get involved? Click here...
